Phil and Dave are two accomplished musicians who form the acoustic duo Backwater. They have been playing on the Leicester and Midlands music scene for many years in one form or another. You can regularly see them performing together or with other musicians at various gigs and parties. Phil is also an accomplished singer songwriter who performs regularly on local radio.
I started musical life a long time ago now doing local folk clubs in Leicester and the midlands – I think I was 16 when I did my first gig just solo. Over the years I knocked on the door of a ‘proper’ musical career but never got further than the hall! I had a single out on Polydor in ’76 with a band called ‘Kites’ and Pete Townsend of The Who signed me up to his Eel Pie Publishing Company. I bounced about a bit and finally got another single out on EMI with a band called ‘The Dots’ , where Dave was the bass player and a deal with Virgin Publishing in ’82. It reached the dizzy heights of number 96 in the charts but for some reason we never got a follow up. Ah well.. When The Dots expired I hung up my guitar and didn’t really play again until the autumn of 2006. Since then my musical life has been reborn and I like to think that I am a well known regular on the local music scene. I have been playing acoustic music with Dave in one form or another since my return.
I also play regularly in assemblies at a local primary school, call the steps at country dances and ceilidhs and have recently (Sept 10) released a cd of original music called ‘About Time’.
I too started my musical life a long time ago ‘up north’ in Hull where I am originally from. Started playing in bands when I was at school, progressed onto the local music scene and served an apprenticeship in the pubs and clubs of Yorkshire. Spent a year in Germany in 1981 playing the American army and airforce bases. On returning to this country I auditioned for a band based in Leicester called the Dots, where Phil happened to be the lead singer. Similarly, I too hung up my guitar when the Dots split and entered the real world to get a ‘proper’ job as my mum would say. Since getting back together again with Phil we have played in various forms with friends or as a duo and Backwater seems a natural progression as we become more popular and play more functions and gigs.
